Cases/Surveillance Dashboard

The blue ribbon is located on the left-hand side. The menu item with a white background, in this case the Dashboard, shows you where you are currently located. The overview has three possible views: Surveillance (A), Contacts (B) and Samples (C). You can switch between the views by clicking on the respective button at the top right. The active view is highlighted in dark blue.

Period under review

The period to be viewed can be selected directly under the "surveillance dashboard" heading.

SORMAS automatically selects a comparison period to compare the data in relation to the previous period. The default period is first "this epi-week" compared to the "epi-week before". This abbreviation stands for "epidemiological week", which always covers the period from Monday of the same week to the current week.

Click on the respective button (C), e.g.: today's or yesterday's day or an individual time period. If a user-defined time period is selected and confirmed by clicking the button, SORMAS automatically selects a filter for the comparison.

The default setting for the overview is "Most important date" (D). Under this setting the data on the number of cases refer to the date of symptom onset, provided that this date and to the notification date if no symptom onset date is available. In this case Drop-down menu possible, alternatively the setting "Symptom start date" or "Case report date" to display the overview figures according to this data.

The overview refers to all cases to which the case definition categories 0, or A-E are assigned; cases with the category "X. No case" are not included in the calculation.

Comparative data

There are two display blocks in the line below the period to be viewed. On the left the current outbreak (in the example figure COVID-19 with 0 new cases, (E) in key figures. This includes the number of new cases in the selected comparison period is displayed. A small arrow indicates whether the figures are trending upwards or downwards.

In addition, the deaths in the selected period and the number of deaths that have taken place events are shown. Click on the table symbol in the middle to open the compressed box shown in detail as a table. To the right of this information box (F) is a Comparison with the previous week. The chart shows the difference in the number of cases compared to the previous period. By moving the mouse over the brown bar in this illustration is run, the difference in the number of infected persons is displayed. This comparative overview can be hidden by selecting the "Hide overview" option.

Key figures (new cases, death rate, etc., new events, test results)

Further down are the key figures on the current infection rate with subdivisions. From left to right in this row:

  • 1st block New cases (G): The number of new cases in the selected period broken down by case definition category. The category "X. No case" category is not included.

  • 2nd block (H): Key figures on the case fatality rate, the number of outbreak counties, cases in isolation or going into isolation (i.e. "newly" added to isolation during the set observation period), contacts that were converted into a case, designated as cases resulting from contacts and cases with a fulfilled reference definition (cases C1 , D1 and E1 = cases confirmed by PCR detection or pathogen isolation).

  • 3rd block New events (I): Overview of the new events broken down into the categories "Cluster", "Event", "Signal", "Screening" and "dropped". The function and definition of "Events" is explained in chapter 5.

  • 4. block Test results (J): Current figures on test results, i.e. laboratory samples, broken down by test results "positive", "negative", "pending" and "undetermined" .

Epidemiological Curve

There are two large graphics at the bottom of the page. The left-hand side shows the epidemiological curve by case definition category. The coloring of the individual categories corresponds to the legend above.

Regardless of the period selected under the "surveillance dashboard" heading, this curve shows an overview of the cases from the last seven weeks (A) by default. This can be changed in the "grouping" menu, for example to days or months (B).

The setting "Always display at least 7 entries" can be deactivated by removing the checkmark. If the selected period is "this epi-week", SORMAS will display the current epi-week, the current month or the days of the current epi-week when deactivated. If a user-defined period is selected, SORMAS displays all days, weeks or months of the user-defined period in the epidemiological curve if at least 7 entries are deactivated. In addition, the curve can be switched from "case status" to "alive or dead", in which case the status of the cases is displayed for the same period (C). Click on the two arrows pointing apart at the top right (D) to enlarge the image. Below this (E), in the field with the three gray bars one below the other, you can download the graphic or request an export of the selected data, either as an image in various formats (png, jpeg, pdf) or in the form of raw data (csv, xls).

Case Status Card

The case status map is located to the right of the epidemiological curve. The map material from OpenStreetMap is used here, all entries remain on your own SORMAS instance. In this map, the cases of your own district/city are displayed, broken down by case definition category, and can thus be located. Facilities are listed separately. The cases are always displayed if the so-called "geo button" has been pressed at the appropriate point in the case file after entering the complete address data, which calculates the GPS coordinates from the address data entered and transfers them to the map (the geo button is discussed in the chapters on cases, contacts and events).

Just like the epidemiological curve, the case status map can also be enlarged by clicking on the double arrow on the right above the map. The map can also be zoomed in and out by using the plus and minus symbols or the mouse. With click on the symbols shown, which are explained in the legend, to open the corresponding case file in a new browser window.

In addition to the legend, there is a button for different "layers" below the map. Clicking on this field opens the selection list shown above. Various filters can be applied to the map to display more or less information. For example, only the confirmed cases (case definition category C, D and E) can be displayed on the map or the cases can be broken down by institution and/or home address. In addition to the cases, the contacts (squares) and events (triangles at the top) can also be displayed on the map. Furthermore, "Show epidemiological situation" can be selected to show the epidemiological situation of the entire year, regardless of all other filters listed above.
